The Jewish Studies programme at Georg Olms Verlag focuses on German-Jewish and European-Jewish discourses in past and present. Jewish culture and literature are at the centre of the programme. Publications discuss issues such as belonging to European societies, especially in Germany, as well as experiences of marginalisation and strategies of self-assertion.
In this context, emancipation since the Enlightenment, Reform Judaism and cultural Jewish identity play an essential role. Jewish personalities such as Moses Mendelssohn, Salomon Formstecher, Salomon Ludwig Steinheim, Hedwig Dohm, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Theodor Lessing, Max Liebermann, Kurt Weill, Stefan Zweig, among many others, are an example of this.
In the 20th century, National Socialism and the Shoah as well as life after the Shoah in Central Europe and Israel become pivotal issues. Last but not least, anti-Semitism in the 21st century is another key aspect of the publications in the programme.
